Windows Activation by Rutgers
The Universal Windows Activator is a single application that is capable of activating the following versions
of Windows:
- Windows Vista Enterprise Edition
- Windows 7 Enterprise Edition
- Windows Server 2008 Standard/Enterprise Edition
- Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard/Enterprise Edition
Core versions of Windows Server 2008 are not supported. For Core versions, you must use the
Server 2008 Core Activator.

The Microsoft Campus Agreement allows for the installation of
Volume License editions of Windows Vista on all university-owned
equipment. In addition to departmental equipment, this includes
all computer labs and university-owned equipment stored off-site
and/or at home.
The Microsoft Campus Agreement requires that adequate steps
be taken to prevent the installation of Volume License copies of
Windows Vista outside of the university, on personally owned
equipment, and within the student population. Copies of Vista for
personally-owned equipment will be available at discounted prices
from the University Software Portal in the coming weeks.
In order to ensure compliance with the agreement, the Office of
Information Technology developed the Rutgers Windows Vista
Activator. This application is designed to simplify the activation
process in a manner that guarantees compliance with the agreement.

Windows Server 2008 follows a similar activation mechanism to Windows Vista. However, with
Windows Server 2008 activation, a Key Management Service is not provided. All activations
are done via Multiple Activation Key installed by using the Rutgers Windows Server 2008 Activator.
