Customizing the Setup Procedure

In order to make any customizations to the setup procedure, you will need to download the RADSAdminPackage.zip file from the University Software Portal.

Inside the ZIP file are 3 folders, which each correspond to the 95/98/ME, NT 4.0, and 2000/XP/2003 setup programs. The files for 95/98/ME and NT 4.0 are simply the installation files for the OfficeScan client. The files for 2000/XP/2003 are the customized installer with the OfficeScan client files residing inside of the INSTALL folder. It is highly recommended that you do not modify the OfficeScan client installation files.

Options for SetupRADS.exe Command

The SetupRADS.exe program allows you to specify settings on the command-line to override default settings. Each property can be specified on the command-line by using the syntax PROPERTY=value where PROPERTY is a property from the table below and value is the corresponding value. If the value contains spaces, be sure to surround it with double quote marks.

Property Description
LOG_FOLDER Allows you to override the default location of the log files generated by the setup process; The default location is the same folder in which the executable is located
LOG Allows you to override the default name of the log files generated by the setup process; The default is SETUP.LOG
SILENT Allows you to run a "silent" installation; If set to 1, only progress information and error dialogs will be displayed to the end user. If it is set to 2, no dialogs will be shown*.
MSI_INSTALL This is an internal property that is normally set to 0 to indicate that the setup program is not running from within an MSI file. If you are using the MSI version of the installer, this property is automatically set to 1 for you. The flag signals the installation wizard to hide the actual uninstall information in Add or Remove Programs so that two entries don't show up to end users. It will also remove the uninstall shortcut from the program group in the Start Menu.
DISABLE_PRESCAN If set to 1, this property will allow you to skip the Trend Micro pre-scan process which may speed up the installation. However, it may leave your system vulnerable if it was previously infected with viruses that were not detected by other software. It is recommended only if installing the software on a new system or one that you are sure is clean.
ENABLE_POP3
(not available in MSI deployment)
If set to 1, this property will automatically install and enable the POP3 mail scanning feature of the OfficeScan client software.
ENABLE_OUTLOOK
(not available in MSI deployment)
If set to 1, this property will automatically install and enable the Outlook folder scanning feature of the OfficeScan client software.
ENABLE_WIRELESS
(not available in MSI deployment)
If set to 1, this property will automatically install and enable the Wireless Protection Manager feature of the OfficeScan client software.
OFFICESCAN_PROFILE Allows you to override the default profile selected by the setup program; If this is specified but cannot be found in the list of available profiles, the default profile chosen by the setup program is used instead
OFFICESCAN_SERVER Allows you to configure the server that the client reports to**
OFFICESCAN_PORT Allows you to configure the port the OFFICESCAN_SERVER is listening on**
OFFICESCAN_DOMAIN Allows you to override the default group the system will be placed into on the OfficeScan server**
OFFICESCAN_INSTALL_FOLDER Allows you to override the installation location of the client software**

*NOTE:
If McAfee Desktop Firewall is automatically removed from the system by the installation program, it WILL display dialogs. There is currently no known workaround for this.

**NOTE:
If these settings are set during an interactive installation, the custom profile setting is chosen in the wizard. These settings override any settings from the default profile selected by the install program or the profile specified via the OFFICESCAN_PROFILE property.

Examples:
SetupRADS.exe SILENT=1 DISABLE_PRESCAN=1

SetupRADS.exe LOG_FOLDER=C:\INSTALL LOG=RADS_Setup.LOG OFFICESCAN_PROFILE="My Custom Profile"

SetupRADS.exe SILENT=2 OFFICESCAN_SERVER=my-osce.rutgers.edu OFFICESCAN_DOMAIN="New Clients"

Performing a Silent Installation

To perform a silent installation, simply use the SILENT property as described above. You must send the properties directly to the SetupRADS.exe file or the RADSSetupXP.msi file. The properties will not work properly when used with the self-extracting version of the installer, RADSSetupXP.exe).

Deploying the Software without Administrative Rights

Normally, RADS requires administrative rights to install on a user's system. However, there are 2 methods to work around this.

The first is to deploy the software using the MSI version of the installer, RADSSetupXP.msi, which is available on the University Software Portal. The MSI can simply be run by a user or deployed using Group Policy. However, the caveat to this method is that the system cannot have any antivirus software installed on it that requires Windows Installer for removal. This currently includes previous versions of Trend Micro PC-cillin, RADS, and McAfee VirusScan as well as Symantec's Client Firewall software. If you are sure the system is clean, the MSI installer should work just fine.

Most systems, however, have one of the incompatible applications already installed. The alternative way to deploy the package is by using a system startup script configured by Group Policy in Active Directory. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Copy the original setup files to a shared folder that all of the Active Directory clients have read access to. You should place all of the files in their own directory.
  2. Create an MS-DOS command script that copies the files to the local drive and then launches the SetupRADS.exe process in silent mode. This script can be used as a model.
  3. Copy the script to the same location as the setup files on the shared folder.
  4. Configure Group Policy to run the script when the system starts. It will automatically run the next time the system is restarted.

Pre-Installing the Client on a GHOST Image

If you are pre-installing Trend Micro/RADS on an image that you plan on deploying to multiple computers, you will need to run a small utility on them so that the unique client ID gets regenerated once the system has been redeployed. You must perform these steps BEFORE you image the machine.

  1. Download the Image Setup utility onto the system being imaged.
  2. Double-click the file. You should receive a message stating that the utility will run at next logon.

The next time the system boots and a user logs on, the Trend Micro services will stop, a new client ID will be generated, and the services will restart. This will cause the client to register with its new name, IP, and ID in the database.

If you have already deployed your system, simply follow the instructions above and then logoff and log back on. That will cause the utility to run.

Update Source URLs

If you are running your own OfficeScan server, you may wish to receive your updates from a local OIT server rather than from Trend Micro. You can use any of the following URLs as an update source:
