Rutgers Antivirus Delivery Service (RADS)
Announcing RADS 4.0
What's new with RADS 4.0?
RADS 4.0 is driven by all new antivirus and anti-spyware technology from
Trend Micro, one of the leading
antivirus vendors in the world. This new technology allows us to bring you
greater features and more up-to-date protection from the latest threats on
the Internet.
Some of the most notable features are:
- Immediate Updating - The central RADS servers check
for updates from Trend Micro on an hourly basis. As soon as any update
is available, our servers download it and notify all of the RADS clients
that a component update is available. Previous versions of RADS only
updated once per day or on an "emergency basis" only, leaving systems
exposed to threats for a greater period of time.
- Anti-spyware Capability - RADS now protects against
a much greater range of spyware, adware, malware, grayware, and joke
programs. This eliminates the need for running additional anti-spyware
tools such as Ad-Aware or SpyBot Search and Destroy on your system.
- Built-in Firewall - RADS now also provides you with
built-in firewall capability on Windows NT-based systems. This allows
you to further protect your system from intrusion without the need for
additional software.
- Outbreak Prevention - RADS is now able to protect
systems from viruses when no pattern file for protection is available
from the vendor. Outbreak prevention allows us to deploy policies that
protect your system from the latest threats during the time from when
a virus hits the network to the time when a new pattern file is released.

software. If the instructions below indicate any action on your part, it must be
performed by no later than
July 1, 2006.
- If you have a Unit Computing Specialist or Manager (UCS or UCM),
- check with them on what you should do. They will be able to tell you
whether or not you should have to do anything with your system.
- If you are currently running antivirus software that you paid
for or that is licensed as freeware, such as ClamAV,
- and you wish to install RADS 4.0, you should remove any existing antivirus
software from your system before installing it. Then follow the installation
procedure on the RADS website.
- and you wish to continue running your current software, you may do so.
In this case you do not need to do anything.
- If your system is currently running a previous version of RADS,
- and you wish to continue using RADS, you do not need to remove it. Simply
follow the installation procedure on the RADS
website.
- and you do not wish to upgrade, you MUST remove the software

from Rutgers,
- and you wish to use RADS, you do not need to remove it unless you are running
a version of McAfee VirusScan older than 7.0. If you are running an older version of
the software, you should uninstall it first. Then follow the installation procedure
on the RADS website.
- and you do not wish to use RADS, you MUST remove the software

receive automatic updates from Rutgers or be able to download updates from Rutgers

Do I have to run RADS?
You are not required to run RADS on your system. However, it is the single solution
now being provided for free from the Office of Information Technology. If you do not
wish to use RADS, you will need to purchase antivirus software from a retail or online
store or download other free antivirus software to run on your system.

What happened to the free non-RADS antivirus software?
Previously, you could download RADS or a standalone version of McAfee VirusScan that
did not report to any server. The two separate packages existed because RADS did not allow
users to override settings on their system. Therefore, users who wanted to configure the
settings themselves needed to use the standalone version of McAfee VirusScan.
RADS 4.0 eliminates the need for 2 separate packages because the new version will allow
clients to change their settings from the defaults provided by the server once the software
has been installed. It combines the flexibility of the old standalone package with the
manageability of the previous version of RADS.
A single solution allows us to provide you with a better experience and enables us to
provide better support to you when there is a problem. RADS 4.0 is a significant improvement
over previous versions and will provide you with the best antivirus solution that is
available for free to any member of the Rutgers community.

Why are we moving from McAfee to Trend Micro?
For the past several years, Rutgers University had contracted with McAfee, Inc. to
provide the campus with an antivirus solution for desktops, servers, and e-mail. Based
on user feedback, we became increasingly aware of the fact that the product's effectiveness
had begun to diminish. We, therefore, began to evaluate antivirus solutions from other
major vendors in the enterprise market. If you would like to read more about our evaluation
criteria and results, please feel free to take a look at our Antivirus Solution Evaluation document.
