ClamXav for MacOS

What is ClamXav?

ClamXav is a free virus checker for Mac OS X. It uses the tried, tested and very popular ClamAV open source antivirus engine as a back end.

Back in the days before OS X, the number of viruses which attacked Macintosh users totalled somewhere between about 60 and 80. Today, the number of viruses actively attacking OS X users is relatively small. However, this doesn't mean you should get complacent about checking incoming email attachments or web downloads, for two reasons. Firstly, there's no guarantee that Mac users will continue to enjoy the status quo, but more importantly, the majority of the computing world use machines running MS Windows, for which an enormous quantity of viruses exist, so it's necessary to be vigilant in checking the files that are passed on to friends and colleagues.

Select the Schedule tab and then make sure Scan is selected. Choose a time to run a full system scan and then click Save Schedule Settings. If your system is not on during this time, a full scan will not be performed. Full scans can be quite intensive and may be disruptive while working on the system, so it is recommended that you choose a time when your system will be on but unused.

Preferences - Scheduled Scan

Click the Update tab on the page. Choose a time to update the DAT / pattern files for ClamXav. Be sure to click Save Schedule Settings once you have configured your update time. If you have previously scheduled updates, but it appears to have returned to the default settings, try clicking the Re-load Schedule Settings button.

You should schedule your updates before running your system scan so that the DAT files are up-to-date before a scan is performed.

STEP 7: Configure Automatic Scanning

ClamXav can "watch" folders for you so that items can be scanned as they are saved to your computer. The current version of the software cannot automatically scan DMG files or Firefox downloads. You can manually scan these files after they have been downloaded. To enable Folder Sentry for automatic scanning:

  1. From the Preferences dialog, select the Folder Sentry tab.
  2. Drag a folder from any Finder window or the Desktop into the list.
  3. Repeat this for any folder you wish to watch. Please note that Folder Sentry will NOT scan subfolders automatically. If you wish to scan a subfolder of a folder in the list, you must add that folder separately.
  4. Check the Scan inserted disks... and Launch ClamXav Sentry when you log in... boxes.
  5. Click the Save Settings & Launch ClamXav Sentry button.
  6. If you add folders at a later time, you will need to restart the sentry program.
